Students Learn About MREs in 7th Grade Science at WMS
Woodbury Middle School seventh graders in Kari McCarthy's Science classes recently welcomed Kelly Kulesza from the Air Force Reserve to help students understand how the military uses Meal Ready to Eat (MRE) kits as meals.
Students learned how MREs use a flameless heating source to heat the food for military when deployed or on base during training. They also talked about MRE use in natural disasters and other times when no heat source is readily available. The MRE is the anchoring phenomenon for the new seventh-grade science unit.
For this unit, students will attempt to create designs for a homemade flameless heater and compare designs with classmates. Kulesza's daughter, Katie, is a seventh grader at WMS.
